Winter Fun at Magnetic Hill Zoo

If you are looking for a fun winter activity now that COVID restrictions are lifted, make sure to add the Magnetic Hill Zoo to your list!

The volunteer organization “Friends of the Zoo” is hosting wintery Sundays at the zoo each weekend so that you can visit to see some of the animals that enjoy being out in the colder weather!

Admission Cost

Admission is only $6 per adult, $4 for ages 4 to 18 and free for ages 3 and under. It’s a fun, inexpensive way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Due to COVID capacity limits however they do recommend to reserve a time slot in advance on moncton.ca

Animals

So most importantly is, “what type of animals am I going to see? Aren’t they cold?” Well don’t worry! The only animals that are out and about are the animals that enjoy the colder weather, and they all have access to shelter if they want to go inside. Animals you may get to see include their:

• Amur Tigers
• Jaguars
• Western Cougars
• Amur Leopard
• River otters
• Northern Wolf
• Rheas
• Pygmy goats
• And many more!

Also inside of their “Ecodome” (which is a very warm, enclosed shelter) you will get to see reptiles, marmosets, meerkats and more!

Since the weather is colder, you unfortunately won’t get to see the monkeys, lions, zebras, etc as these animals all require warmer weather and are currently being well looked after in warmer shelters.

Maple Fun!

It’s maple season in New Brunswick! That’s a big deal here as any locals know. In the zoo right before the tiger enclosure you can find a kiosk that sells hot beverages as well as local maple treats such as a maple cone or “maple on a stick!”.

COVID Guidelines

As with anything nowadays, there are COVID requirements that follow the New Brunswick provincial guidelines. These regulations can change at any point (if we enter a different phase, etc.) so please make sure to visit the Magnetic Hill Zoo’s Facebook page or website for the most up to date guidelines before your visit.

At the time of our visit, the province was in yellow phase, which means a mask was mandatory while inside buildings (like admission or the ecodome) however when we were walking around outside the masks were not required, only recommended. We ended up wearing our masks mostly to keep warm as we definitely felt safe, however there were a couple places people would crowd to see a specific animal.

The zoo is also organized so that you walk in one direction. Areas are roped off and always making sure you follow traffic a certain way.

We felt very safe during our visit especially as we were outside in the open air. But please do what makes you feel comfortable.

The zoo was such a fun way to get outside and spend a Sunday. It wasn’t expensive and I’m always excited to visit animals! Add this to your list during any season of the year, it’s a great zoo and the animals are extremely well cared for!
